Newbie Helping: A guide by BleedingSoul

 

  1. Basic things to know

First of all, walking is done by clicking the ground. (This might seem a stupid thing to mention but I’ve known people who were to stupid to understand. ;-P) Chatting is done by just typing your text and pressing enter. There are several ways to chat. There are channels, you can talk in local, guild chat or personal messages.

1 – This icon will usually be selected, it is used to walk.

2 – This is the ‘sit’ icon, click it to sit down. When sitting, click it again to stand up.

3 – The ‘look’ button use this on items and you will get a message saying what you see.

4 – The ‘use’ button this will change your cursor into a pointy finger, use this cursor on useable items in orders to use them, for example use it on a fruit or vegetable and you will use one.

5 – The ‘use with’ icon, this icon isn’t used a lot, personally I don’t use it very often, you can use it to put logs or branches on a heap of wood and then use a Fire Essence on it to light a fire. You can try this on Isla Prima.

6 – The ‘trade’ icon, use this icon and click other people to initiate trade with them.

7 – The ‘attack’ icon, obviously you will use this one to attack monsters, players. Normally your cursor will automatically change to a sword on monsters and animals. This icon will probably only be used when you are in PK maps. On players your icon doesn’t automatically change itself.

8 – The ‘inventory’ button, this will open up your inventory, click again to close it.

9 – The ‘magic’ button, this will open up your magic window. Here you can select sigils you bought and cast spells.

10 - The ‘mixing’ button, this will open up a window in which you can mix several items to creature a new item. (More info on this further in the guide.)

11 – The ‘status’ icon, clicking this button will open up a window with info about your characters levels, your material and ethereal points, your amount of pickpoints etc.

12 – The ‘help’ button, opening up a window where you find A LOT of info about the game. Under more an encyclopedia.

13 – Clicking this icon, the ‘map’ icon will open up the map of the place where you currently are, clicking on the upper-left small map will show you the map of the full continent. You can also press TAB, which is easier.

14 – The ‘console’ button, clicking on this button will open up your recent chatlog. You can also press F1, which is easier.

15 – The ‘buddy’ icon, clicking on this icon will open up your buddy list. Here you can see which of your friends are online. You must add them to the list to be able to see this though. Right-clicking on a friends name opens up some options.

16 – The ‘options’ menu, this will open up your options window, here you can put your settings on video, sound and such.


3. Basic skills knowledge

 

First of all, we have 9 skills in Eternal Lands and an overall level. These nine skills are:

Attack and defense, harvesting, alchemy, potioning, crafting, manufacturing, magic and summoning.

Here I will explain all these skill a little bit and give you the basic things you can make with them.

 

Attack and defense.

Obviously, attacking and defending is all about fighting. As you level these skills your fighting will improve and you will be able to beat bigger animals and monsters, perhaps players too if you train enough. Training attack will increase your damage and raising defense will increase your chance to avoid damage. As you start to train this, follow this order of animals to get a good start.

First you take on rabbits, second you can go on rats, and third place would go to beavers and then up to deer. After this is fox.

Harvesting.

This skill is the most basic of all and is one you will surely need to help supply your other skills. This skill is trained by mining ores, picking flowers. You will need this skill no matter what you want to do in EL. Start this off by picking flowers, which are easiest to harvest then go up to minerals like quartz and sulphur, and then you’re up to ores and the advanced minerals like diamonds and rubies. You will get experience for your first 120 successful harvests in an hour.

Alchemy

This is also a very basic skill. You use this to mix essences and bars. Bars can be used in other skills like crafting, manufacturing. Essences can used to make your bars, armors or for casting magic spells.

The most basic essence is the Fire Essence and this is the formula to make one.

1 red snapdragon, 1 red rose and 1 sulfur.

You can find other formulas for more essences in your encyclopedia. It will be under the category: Alchemy.

Potioning

This is the skill that allows you to make potions. Potions have different effects, they can boost stats, restore your mana or health. The most basic is the Mana Potion.

Mana Potion: 1 empty vial, 1 wine and 1 blue lupine.

Crafting

With this skill you can make rings and medallions. You have different rings: teleportation rings and fighting rings. Medallions boost something like armor level, accuracy etc.

The most basic ring is the Gold Ring.

Gold Ring: 2 gold bars, 3 fire essences. Ring molder needed

Manufacturing

This skill is used to make clothing, armor and weapons. Nothing much to explain really.

Starting this skill off might take quite some money though. Leather is very expensive, I advise you to do the leather quest if you would like to manufacture.

The first item is Warm Fur Gloves.

Warm Fur Gloves: 3 brown rabbit furs, 2 threads.  Needle needed in inventory.


Magic

Aaah yes, magic. This is quite an interesting skill. It can be a very useful skill if you level it up abit. With this skill you can heal yourself after you fight a monster or an animal. Or players, off course. This can also be a very useful skill if you want to help some people in PK maps. The most basic skill is (small) Heal.

Heal requires the sigils: Increase and Health and 1 Health Essence.

Summoning

Summoning is a skill you can use either for violent slaughter in PK maps or you can do it for fun because you like to call dead things to life, or you can do it to help weaker people train by summoning them small animals.

As the brown rabbit is weakest animal in the game, it is off course also the easiest to summon it. A brown rabbit requires: 1 Life Essence, 1 bone, 1 raw meat and 1 brown rabbit fur. Requires 5 mana. (2 mana if you are wearing a conjurer cloak)

 

So far on the skills. Now I shall present you with some general hints and tips and then a small guide of things you could do to get a good blastoff ingame.

 

4. General hints & tips

 

When harvesting, random events can occur. This can be either good or bad. Bad things are when bees sting you, Mother Nature hits you or you hit a radon or a wall drops on your head. Those things can do huge damage. It is suggested when you harvest that you do it at full health. Heal yourself if you get hit hard. Good things are when you find gold (yay) or find a serpent, enrichment, binding or rostogol stone, you can also receive some extra experience points.

 

With the cooldown system, the clock on the useable items after using it, it can be hard to make things if you use fruits or vegetables. I would advise you level your potioning abit and make feasting potions. They have a short clock time and boost your food level by 50.

 

When you have places you often go to, try and mark them on your map. Right-click that spot and then type #mark <markname> to undo this type #unmark <markname>. That way it will be easier to remember where everything is.

 

Storages are very handy things. You can use them to store your most valuable items. When you just started playing and you earn a few gold coins, it would be wise to put those away in your storage. That way you can’t lose the money if you would die because of harvesting or fighting. Also if you went fighting and you are going to do something else, put away your armor, I speak from experience when I say it sucks to lose things you need and that are valuable to you. The storage in Valley of the Dwarves is very popular to many people, it is always crowded. There are also storages in Desert Pines, Portland, Nordcarn, Tarsengaard and Grahms Village(WhiteStone map).

 

Monsters attack you, watch out when you see one. They stop attacking at certain levels though. Goblins stop attacking once you reach level 21 defense, 26 for Skeletons. The most feared monster for new players is most likely the Goblin in Portland. Newer players often go there to harvest fruits and sell those for money.

They named that Goblin, Bob. Bob the Gob. Also you have two different kinds of white rabbits. The normal white Rabbit and the Fluffy Rabbit. I beg you, if you see a rabbit with the name Fluffy Rabbit, RUN. It is one of the strongest monsters ingame.


Player Killing maps. They are dangerous maps as there are on most PK maps: Monsters AND players. (Players can act like monsters too but I’m not going to explain thatJ) If you enter it, it is at your own risk. Many new players enter PK maps and often get killed by some high-leveled freak. They complain about it, I ask you not to complain. People will just tell you that you entered at you own risk. Try to level before entering PK maps and perhaps don’t take any valuable items if you don’t want to risk them.

 

Getting lost? Not really much of a problem. There is always the option to do a #beam command when you’re lost. Or you can use your map (TAB button) to get out. There is off course an option that you went exploring and realize to late you don’t have a certain map yet. If you need a map, go to www.el-cel.com they have many maps there that don’t come along with your client.

 

About your health, I know that often new players are having a pain when they get hit by a harvesting event or an animal/monster. And its risky to run around with low health so you should, as soon as you are able to, attempt to raise your magic level a little, the Restoration spell is VERY handy when you get hurt, it raises your health to the maximum right away! Off course it will take awhile until you can cast it though.. Until then you got the following options:

- Go check at the beam for any healers around. Just type #beam me

- You go to market channel and buy a few healing potions with some spare money.

- There is a super healing spot on IP, 5hp/mana every minute at coords ??,??

Or you can just sit around for awhile chatting while you wait to get healed up by 1hp/mana every minute.

 

Beware of scammers etc. Check the outlaws section on the Eternal Lands forum often and know who you should be careful with. Some people will try to get things of you for an unfair price and such or tell you to come with them and they lure you to some dangerous monster and will jump your deathbag. To know the names of such people, check the outlaws forum. And also don’t fall for character scams. Some people will offer to train your character for you or such but will just steal your items or delete your character for their own amusement.

 

A small starting off guide for new players.

 

(Request from me: Read the rules when you create a character and when you’re ingame press F5 to re-read them. Please do not break the rules.)

 

When you start, you will end up on Isla Prima. This is where you must learn the game. You will see 2 NPCs. (Non-Playable Characters) They have blue names. The wraith and the Tutorial NPC, I recommend you start by talking to the tutorial NPC. He will give you some info about the interface. He also gives you 3 quests, try and do his 3 quests. If you can finish them, he’ll have a little present for you. If you get stuck somewhere, ask people near you to help you out. There are always people on Isla Prima helping newbies.

 

Did the quests? Great! I hope you like the little reward you got for your work. Now lets get on with the game. Press TAB to open your map and click near the docks. Your character will walk there, this is called mapwalking. At the docks you will see a boat. Here you can go on to the next map. Do so by clicking the flag on the boat.

Good, you entered WhiteStone. Now go on to the next boat, take it and you will end up in Desert Pines. Again you take a boat, but there are 2 this time, make sure you take the correct one. Take the first one you see and you will arrive in Valley of the Dwarves.

 

Walk into the city and then a little bit west, you will see the NPC Molgor. Molgor is a storage NPC. Click him and open your storage. Store your rewards from the Tutorials quests. Open your map and go east, click about where the arrow ‘To Tarsengaard’ is.

Do NOT enter Tarsengaard though. Dangerous monsters are there for newbies.

 

You will see a bush of flowers, Red Snapdragons. Click them to start harvesting them. Harvest 20.

OK, now go abit north towards the water, you will see red roses near the rocks. Harvest 20 of them also. Good, now go to the docks and take the boat. Back in Desert Pines, open your map. In the west you see a black hole. An entrance to a cave. Click there and enter the cave when you arrive. Remember you have a map of the cave, use it in case you get lost. Now follow the wall along the north side of the cave and you will end up near the sulfur. I assume following this guide you might not have levelled your harvesting a lot yet, so you probably can’t harvest sulfur yourself yet. Ask if anyone there could hand you 20 sulfur. If you can’t get any return to Valley of the Dwarves. Harvest some flowers to raise your harvesting level and sell the flowers for some money, I suggest you harvest lilacs south of the flower shop. Store your roses and snapdragons first though.

 

Once you have some money store it. Ask around if anyone can sell you a pair of leather gloves. I suggest you buy 3 pair. You can also use channels. The Market channel is channel 3. (#jc 3 to join the market channel type @<message> to talk on that channel)

If you can don’t have enough money yet, keep on harvesting flowers and selling them.

 

Ok, now you got some gloves, return to the cave in Desert Pines. Go to the sulfur and try to harvest it until you have 20 sulfur. Good, now return to Valley of the Dwarves. Once you return store your sulfur and go harvest some vegetables, they are just across the river in the east. Eat the vegetables until your food level is positive. Then grab 5 sulfur, 5 red roses and 5 red snapdragons and open the Mixing window.

Select 1 of each and press ‘Mix’. Congratulations, you just made your very first Fire Essence. Now keep mixing until all your ingredients are used up.

 

To continue the game, there are several ways. I suggest you keep making Fire Essences still for awhile. Once your level is high enough in Alchemy you can try harder essences and other skills. You have learned the basics on the skills earlier in this guide. This was just how I help new players out if I meet any on Isla Prima and they ask me for help.

Almost forgot this section, not sure what to put here though but I’ll come up with something.

 

How do I earn money fast and easy?

Well, there are several ways of getting money. For new players it’s often easiest to harvest things and sell them. For example: harvest flowers in Valley of the Dwarves and sell it to the flower shop. You could also repeat my starting guide and make more Fire Essences, those sell for some gold too on market channel. Also check bags when running through a map it might hold some meat and bones and furs. You can also sell those to other players.

If you find a deathbag of someone on the way try and return it to the rightful owner though. Almost forgot to mention, there really isn’t a way to get easy money but there is for fast money. J

 

I often see players use abbreviations that I don’t understand. What do they mean?

I died and I ended up in the Underworld, I used to come back at the beam. What do I do?

 

Easy, just go north to get out, I hope you’ll find your deathbag back also. Once you reach level 8 or 9 overall (not quite sure its one of both) you will go to the Underworld instead of the beam. You will also have 50% chance to lose an item in your inventory. This chance works per slot.

 

How do I get most experience out of fighting?

 

Not hard at all, fighting is usually quick exp anyway. Don’t use a sword and make sure to use armor. A sword will cause you to do more damage, so less hits and less hits means less exp, so better go store that sword. Armor will not reduce your defense exp but just reduce your damage taken. Try other skills as well, its not just fighting that gives a lot of exp. And try to level your magic too, you’ll need it if you want to be a good fighter.

 

What is the best way to spend my pickpoints?

 

This is always a difficult question and I can’t really answer it either. The best way depends on what you’d like to do in EL. Take nexuses to according what you’d like to be as the nexuses are bound to skills. Make sure you get yourself some physique and coordination though, you’ll need it to have some carry load. It’s easy to be able to carry abit more.

 

I’m trying to cast a magic spell but it doesn’t work. Why?

 

There are several possibilities, first of all check if your sigils are in the correct order. Yes, the order matters. Second option is you don’t have the needed essences on you. The third option is you’re out of mana.

How the attack/defense experience becomes calculated.

For atk exp: def lvl monster*2 - own atk lvl + 1/3 rationality (optional +xx% from god, rounded down to last number)

For def exp: atk lvl monster*2 - own def lvl + 1/3 rationality (optional +xx% from god, rounded down to last number)

 

Example of me fighting Fluffy Rabbits:

Atk exp: 95*2 = 190 – 94 + 12/3 (4) = 100 exp per hit

Def exp: 95*2 = 190 – 94 + 12/3 (4) = 100 exp per dodge

 

When you’re calculating with a god boost in exp and you have like 16.9+ exp do NOT count it as +17, but round it down to +16. I’ve tested this with someone who had +17.8 when fighting me, and I calculated it as +18 but he only had +17.

 

Experience for other skills is easy. You take the base exp (found in encyclopedia) and then add the following:

+rationality when harvesting (optional +boost from god)

+1/2 rationality when mixing/spell casting (optional +boost from god)

 

How success rate can be calculated when mixing.

Your own lvl in the skill you’re using + potion/manu (optional) divided by the recommended lvl of an item that you are mixing * 2.

 

For example: you’re mixing health essences at lvl 24 alchemy. Not using potion/blessing.

24 / 18*2 = 0,666% or you have a success rate of 66.6%

 

NOTE: There is no perfect level, you will never have a 100% success rate.
